SEMrush has recently introduced a noteworthy enhancement to its Position Tracking tool that reflects the evolving landscape of search and user behavior. With a growing number of consumers now using generative AI platforms like ChatGPT to answer queries traditionally reserved for search engines, tracking presence in these environments has become increasingly relevant for marketers.
SEMrush now allows users to monitor whether their domain appears in ChatGPT-generated search results. This represents a forward-thinking update that acknowledges the changing nature of how people seek and receive information online.
The new feature makes it possible for digital marketers to see whether their website is cited as a source in ChatGPT responses, provided the user is utilizing Site Preview mode through the Bing Search API integration. This applies to ChatGPT-4 users with web-browsing capabilities activated via Bing.
This means that if ChatGPT browses the web using Bing to generate an answer and includes your domain, SEMrush will detect and log that mention. These mentions will appear in the Position Tracking report as a specific search feature called “ChatGPT”, providing another data point for understanding a website’s online visibility beyond traditional SERP features.
The integration expands the scope of SEO monitoring by including generative AI in the visibility mix, offering insights into how your content contributes to the answers produced by AI platforms in real time. The Position Tracking report has long allowed users to monitor search features like featured snippets, People Also Ask, and local packs. Including ChatGPT as a dedicated search feature provides additional value for those investing in AI-optimized content strategies.
As OpenAI’s ChatGPT becomes more integrated into daily workflows and search behavior through its Bing-powered browsing, having visibility into how often your domain is referenced becomes especially useful for brand monitoring and attribution.
From a strategic perspective, this move by SEMrush is more than a cosmetic update. It reflects a deeper shift, where traditional SEO approaches must now factor in AI-generated content and the broader information ecosystem. By identifying content that surfaces in AI conversations, marketers can assess which pages are regarded as authoritative not only by search engines but also by AI systems trained to distill and present the internet’s data efficiently.
To start using the feature, SEMrush users simply need to open their Position Tracking campaign, navigate to the Rankings tab, and look under the Featured Snippets filter, where the new “ChatGPT” label will now appear as an option. This enhancement is available on Guru and Business plans and does not require data refetching it will auto-populate based on historical and current signals.
As AI continues to influence how content is discovered and presented, tracking performance in these channels will become indispensable. SEMrush’s latest update equips marketers with a clearer view into this intersection, ensuring they stay competitive in an environment where search is no longer limited to the traditional search engine results page.
