GEO, AEO, LLMO, AI SEO: Which Term Is Right?
Four acronyms compete to describe roughly the same work. Here is what each one actually means, and why the distinction matters less than the vendors selling it would like.
Generative Engine Optimization
Optimizing to be retrieved, extracted, and cited inside an answer that an AI system writes from several sources at once. This is the term used in the founding academic paper on the subject, and the one we use here.
Answer Engine Optimization
The older term. It began with featured snippets, position zero, and voice assistant answers, where the engine surfaces an existing passage rather than writing a new one. It has since stretched to cover AI answer boxes, which is why it now overlaps with GEO almost completely.
Large Language Model Optimization
Usually framed as the technical layer underneath GEO: how a model retrieves, chunks, and attributes source material. Some practitioners use it as the broadest umbrella term instead. There is no settled convention.
AI Search Optimization
The plain-language catch-all. It carries no specific technical meaning, but it is what most business owners actually type into a search box, which makes it worth using in conversation even if it is imprecise.
As of 2026 there is no agreed academic or industry definition separating these terms, and practitioners use them interchangeably. If a vendor tells you AEO and GEO require different engagements, ask them to name one deliverable that differs. The underlying work is the same: be findable, be extractable, be attributable.
The AI Search Landscape
Each AI search platform operates differently and draws from different sources. Understanding how each one works is the foundation of any effective GEO strategy.
Google AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated summaries appear at the top of results for informational and research queries. They pull from indexed web pages, giving preference to sites with clear structure, authoritative content, and valid structured data. Sites already ranking well in traditional organic results have an advantage here, but structure and entity clarity matter independently.
Perplexity AI
Perplexity operates as a conversational research tool that cites sources inline. It tends to favor pages with dense, specific factual content and clear attribution. Sites with well-structured articles, detailed service pages, and consistent brand signals across the web earn frequent citations in Perplexity responses.
ChatGPT Search
ChatGPT pulls live web results when a user asks a current or research-oriented question, then cites the pages it used. It favors content that is comprehensive, well-organized, and easy for a language model to parse. Clear headings and a genuine question-and-answer structure make content significantly more likely to be cited.
Bing Copilot
Microsoft's Copilot is powered by the Bing index and OpenAI models. It is integrated directly into Windows, Microsoft Edge, and the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, giving it a large and growing user base. Sites indexed in Bing with strong structured data and authoritative content are well-positioned for Copilot citations.
Meta AI
Meta AI is embedded across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, which places an assistant inside apps most people already have open. As Meta folds AI answers into social search and discovery, brand presence in relevant social contexts and consistent entity signals become meaningful GEO factors.
Grok (xAI)
Grok is xAI's model built into X (formerly Twitter) with access to real-time posts and public conversations. It draws on live X data to answer queries with current information. Brands with consistent entity signals and active presence in relevant online conversations are well-positioned as Grok's reach grows.
How GEO Differs from Traditional SEO
GEO and traditional SEO share many foundations but diverge in important ways. Understanding the differences is critical to allocating effort correctly.
Ranking vs Citing
Traditional SEO earns positions in a ranked list. GEO earns citations inside an AI-written answer. The goal shifts from "appear on page one" to "be selected as the source the AI trusts for this topic."
Keywords vs Entities
Traditional SEO optimizes for keyword phrases. GEO optimizes for entity recognition: making sure AI systems understand precisely who your business is, what you do, and where you operate based on consistent signals across the web.
Click-Through vs Brand Mention
AI answers often do not generate a click. The value of appearing in an AI answer is brand exposure and mention at the moment of relevance, which drives direct search and brand authority over time even without an immediate traffic referral.
Content Format Matters More
AI systems prefer content that is easy to parse: clear headings, concise answers to specific questions, and direct factual statements. Dense walls of text optimized for keyword density perform poorly in GEO even when they rank well in traditional search.

Pages vs Brand Entity
Traditional SEO optimizes individual pages for specific keyword targets. GEO optimizes the overall brand entity so AI systems consistently recognize who you are, what you do, and where you operate, regardless of which page they encounter first.
What the Research Actually Shows
GEO is a young field with a lot of confident opinion and very little controlled evidence. There is one peer-reviewed study worth knowing about.
GEO can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses.Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, presented at the 30th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, 2024.
The study tested nine content optimization methods against a benchmark of user queries and found that the changes which moved the needle most were adding cited sources, adding direct quotations, and adding relevant statistics. Purely cosmetic changes, including keyword stuffing, did little or nothing.
Two caveats we would rather state than hide. The experiment ran against a simulated generative engine rather than a live commercial one, and it dates from 2024, which is a long time in this field. Treat the 40 percent figure as evidence that content structure demonstrably affects citation rates, not as a number anyone should promise you.

Why GEO Matters Now
AI search adoption is growing quickly, and the measurement of it is genuinely messy. Independent trackers put AI Overview presence at roughly half of US Google queries by early 2026, but published estimates range from about 25 percent to over 60 percent depending on the keyword sample and the method, so treat any single number with caution. On the standalone tools, the clearest first-party figure available is from Perplexity's chief executive, who said the platform handled 780 million queries in May 2025 and was growing more than 20 percent month over month.
The direction is not really in dispute even if the magnitude is. Businesses that optimize for AI search now will have a compounding advantage as adoption grows. The content, entity signals, and authority that earn AI citations today become increasingly valuable as more of your audience starts their search in an AI interface rather than a traditional search bar. Waiting until AI search is dominant to start optimizing means starting from zero while competitors who began earlier have already established citation authority.
Worth being straight about the flip side too: measuring AI visibility is still limited compared to the reporting you are used to in Search Console, and anyone claiming precise AI citation share is extrapolating. We would rather tell you what is measurable and what is not.

Any industry where people research before buying or contacting is heavily affected. Legal, financial, healthcare, home services, SaaS, and professional services see the largest impact because those queries tend to be informational before they become transactional.
Google AI Overviews draw from the existing index, so improvements can appear within weeks as pages are re-crawled after content updates. Perplexity and ChatGPT citation frequency typically improves within 30 to 90 days of implementing GEO content changes. Entity and brand signal improvements compound over several months as consistency builds.
